The goal of this class is to teach student reporters how to produce, gather, and
report news for a
top 25 TV market in Pittsburgh, KDKA-TV; a statewide broadcast network,
West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPB); a statewide conglomerate of seven newspapers,
HD Media; and the City of Morgantown’s Public Access Channel. These partnerships
give our students a platform to showcase their work.
This classroom will run as an actual 'newsroom.' Student reporters will be assigned beats, have weekly news meetings and will report to the class professors as their 'news directors.' Students will learn every aspect of what it takes to put together a newscast. From choosing stories in their beats, to shooting, editing, writing and producing those stories and finally, students will serve as the talent or technical crew during the newscast taping. Students will also learn how to use social media to promote their work.
