Newscast #2- Anderson Small- Fall 2018

At auditions, I felt pumped because I was finally able to do what I’ve always wanted to do. Freshman year, I wanted to get past all the prerequisites and actually get into sports reporting. When I sat down on camera, I felt excited to finally be auditioning for the sports anchor position. While reading the script, I kept thinking just be yourself and show personality. Over time, we were taught to sound professional and not really show much emotion because you don’t want to sound like you're siding with a team or story. With this class, it’s the same but I can be more of myself and try to bring the story to life with my voice. Therefore, during auditions I tried to be myself and as a result, I got the position.

Anchor Announcements

It felt great to show up to the studio and take photos with the anchors and the photographers. We did big group photos and Professor Dahlia congratulated all of us once when found out what our positions were. After we took all the anchor photos, we then started doing the sports photos. They gave us football jerseys to wear, football gloves, and helmets. It was a sense of relief to know that I was finally able to doing what I’ve always wanted to do. I couldn’t wait to shoot my first football game package against Kansas State.

Game Day

On game day, I was so pumped to get to do my story on WVU’s wide receiver Gary Jennings. I met with Professor Jay Gilmore and we headed over to the stadium. Once we got to the stadium, we had a big meal in the press box. Honestly, one of my favorite parts of the game. After we ate, we headed down to the field and I began to walk around to see where I could locate myself. People looked at me differently when they saw me walking around with my ESPNU mic flag. That’s when I knew things were getting official. During the game, I was moving all around the field to get my best shots of Jennings on the field. I had a great time shooting and knew this story would be special in the end.

Show time

The week went by and after all the long editing, it was time to do the show. I woke up that morning excited while putting my suit on. In my head I’m thinking, “today is going to be fun. Be confident, be yourself, and have fun on camera.” When I arrived and saw everyone ready to air, I kept smiling

because I knew it would be a good show. I practiced my script a few times in the bathroom before we got mic’d up. Moments later, I was sitting at the desk getting ready to start the show. 5,4,3,2,1. The cameras were rolling, and I remember sitting there thinking to myself “You got it. Let’s do this.” When my sports package began to roll, all the nerves went out the window and I got engaged with my story. When I finished, I felt good about it and couldn't wait to see it online. Show one was done and it was now time to get ready for the next newscast. For more updates on my story from newscast 2, follow my twitter @ASmallWVUNews.
