Newscast #1 - Chris Marzullo - Spring 2019

Auditions

chris

At auditions, I was more than excited to, for the first time, get in front of the camera. Never being in front of the camera before I hardly knew what to expect. Some initial nerves did kick in while waiting for my name to be called. But, I met with Shelby Davis, the ESPNU Teaching Assistant, a couple hours before the auditions. She was extremely helpful in anything I might have been unsure about and gave me a few tips about my personality and how I should be carrying myself on and off air.

I often struggle with pacing and I tend to speak a bit too fast and ramble words together. At the auditions I did that to start out, but as they went on I settled into more of a comfort zone and started getting closer and closer to where I needed to be. However, my main goal in the auditions was to show my personality, and be as conversational as possible, which is what best helped me get the position.

Anchor Announcements

Heading over to the Waterfront studio, I felt nervous in hopes of my name being called for the ESPNU Sports Anchor position. I had no other backup positions, and this was all I really wanted to do for WVU News. When I heard my name called I just had all this inner excitement and joy, trying to contain myself the best I could. I was so excited to get to work and really start learning and improving on how to be a better reporter and anchor, and what better way to do that than covering sports. Sports have been a part of my entire life, from playing them as a kid, to following them all the way up until now, and finally I get to officially be covering sports.

Covering 2019 National Signing Day

signing day

Recently hired WVU head football coach, Neal Brown, held a press conference on February 6th at 3:00 p.m. to speak with the media regarding the last few newly signed Mountaineer student-athletes. Coach Brown announced the signing of three new players, Jordan Jefferson, Tavian Mayo, and Rashean Lynn Jr. Coach Brown also spoke highly regarding the excitement he has to work with each and every one of these kids. But, what Coach Brown discussed at the press conference that stood out the most was that he retained all 18 of the signees who signed under the previous coaching regime in December and January, the time prior to his hiring. It is very rare a change in staff retains all their signees, but Coach Brown and his staff got to work and made the nearly unthinkable happen, while also adding three additional players on National Signing Day. As of now, nearly 10 days following National Signing Day, there are still three open roster spots for the team which they can fill if they so choose.

Show Time (First Newscast)

newscast

Following all the hard work and time put in during the week leading up to the first show, it was finally time to go on air. I feel you can never really prepare for a moment like that until you experience it. You can read the script over and over, and make sure you are dressed to the nines. But, if you do not present yourself in a professional and timely manner in front of the camera, then it does not do your work justice.

Overall, I felt the first newscast of the semester went well. I was disappointed in myself mainly due to my lack of conversational personality while speaking. I felt I needed an extra deep breath and appear much more relaxed. However, I take the first show and use it as a platform and learning experience for future on air appearances I could potentially have. But, I had so much fun being on air. I love to dress professionally and have my face and voice be associated with covering sports. Even from one newscast I have learned so much and hope to improve each time.
