Newscast #3 - Chris Marzullo - Spring 2019

For the third newscast, the story I covered was the press conference WVU Football Head Coach Neal Brown held introducing his newly hired staff. The conference was held in the team room at the Milan Puskar Center. Coach Brown only spoke for about five or seven minutes before he opened up the room for media to ask questions to any members of his newly hired staff. The staff would spread out around the room, openly ready for questioning from the media.

I spoke with just about every coach, but I felt the best interview I got were with Defensive Coordinator Vic Koenning, and Quarterbacks Coach Sean Reagan.

However, my package did not make show. I know I need to mainly work on my package being a lot more cleaned up, and overall just different than the rest. Adding in graphics and more creative and proper Stand-Ups and SOT TZ’s will help my package improve. Doing my on- camera work actually at the location of the event is extremely important, and something I will work on for my next package.

For my next package I will be covering the NCAA Rifle Championships, which for the first time in school history, will be hosted in Morgantown. The 2-day event will take place on March 8th and 9th. WVU is very well known for their Rifle program, and finally to be able to host it at the WVU Coliseum is a big deal for the program and the fans that hopefully come out and support the team.

In order to better this package, I will write out a much more detailed script prior to attending the event, as well as arrive earlier and plan out where good shots could potentially be. Getting more familiar with different than the normal sports is something everyone in the sports media field should grow much more comfortable with.

As far as Episode 3 went, I felt we all did much better than previous episodes. I think it was without a doubt the best show yet, and I can tell everyone is getting much more comfortable in their roles as a part of the WVU News team.

From Episode 3, one thing I have learned that I do need to work on is smiling more. I tend to have a bit of a stone face when I am not speaking, and refrain from smiling. I need to work on that and learn to maybe even show more of my teeth when smiling; something I never do.

As far as the staff goes, I feel everyone is helping one another out in order to try and make everyone’s jobs a little easier. Having a helpful staff and fellow students around you makes things easier and less nervous for everyone involved. I can’t wait for the next newscast, Episode 4, later this month.

Lastly, what we have coming up next is a week off due to Spring Break, so that gives everyone some extra time to either start their stories easily, or just take a break for a few days and get ready for the second half of this semester.

Overall, WVU News halfway through has flown by much faster than I thought it would. I have enjoyed learning new things and everything that comes with the experience along the way. You can follow me on Twitter to stay up to date with things WVU sports: @ChrisMWVUNews
