For the first newscast, I did a story on the petition
going around to change the NBA logo to honor Kobe Bryant. Since the current
logo features WVU Men’s Basketball alum Jerry West I focused my story around
how Mountaineer players and fans feel about the petition. I enjoyed filming courtside and talking to the players as it was my first time getting to do so
at this high of a level. It was interesting hearing their opinions about the
petition as they all had a great amount of respect for both West and Bryant.
This story helped me build my confidence as the more games I went to, the more
comfortable I was with keeping the camera steady and getting the most out of my
interviews.
For
my next story I plan on kind of feeding off of my last but instead of focusing
on the petition I want to focus more on Jerry West alone. I want to dive more
into on how West has had an impact here at WVU and on the sport of basketball
as a whole.
Not only does West hold multiple records at WVU, his career only
improved in the NBA winning a championship and making nine total finals
appearances. After retirement he went on to become the head coach of the Lakers
then worked in their executive office as the general manager and vice president
of basketball operations.
I had
a great time on the set for our first newscast and I think it went really well
for everyone. It felt natural being on air with my fellow anchors as if we have
done it a million times. Morale was very high in the studio as everyone was positive
and encouraging which helped make the show flow smoothly. I am already looking
forward to getting back on set with everybody and making the next show even
better.
