Newscast #3 - Hayden Keener - Spring 2020

For the third newscast, I did a story on the Beauty and the Beast meet where the wrestling and gymnastics teams compete side by side in the Coliseum. This was a great experience because I got to cover two sports at once. I was able to get a good variety of shots bouncing around from the wrestling match to the different gymnastics events. I got the chance to speak with the head coaches of both teams as well as some of the athletes who all enjoy hosting this event and said it’s good for both of the programs.

Gymnastics was a lot more difficult to shoot than wrestling. There is a lot of movement in each gymnastics event and I had to figure out ways to get unique shots while being steady and keeping them in my frame. Overall, I enjoyed covering this event and it helped me diversify the sports I’ve been covering this semester.

For my next story I plan on covering how COVID-19 (Corona Virus) is affecting college athletes. The NCAA has already cancelled all remaining winter and spring championships. Everyone understands their reasoning for shutting everything down but athletes are still disappointed losing a year of eligibility with nothing to show for. I want to focus my story on how WVU athletes and coaches feel about this whole ordeal allowing the people to hear from those personally affected.

Anchors at desk

It felt good being back on the set sitting at the desk with my fellow anchors. Everyone was energetic and focused which showed when we were on air. It seems to keep getting easier and easier taping the newscast with everyone feeling comfortable with more takes under our belt. The show improves every time and our team chemistry is through the roof, I am looking forward to being on set one last time for our final newscast even though I wish we could shoot hundreds more.
