Newscast #1 - Andrew Nogowski - Spring 2022

My first story for WVU News was an absolute success!

I did a story on WVU Hockey and how they are different from the other club teams at WVU. I really wanted to do this story because hockey is my favorite sport and I wanted to highlight that we have hockey here at WVU. I feel that the team goes unnoticed or unknown by most students on campus. It is also worth mentioning that there is more than one WVU Hockey team, in fact, there are four in total! There is Men’s D1, D2, D3 and Women’s D2.

For my story, I interviewed Men’s D1 head coach Shane Buckley and Men’s D1 captain Wyatt Murphy. Overall, I enjoyed the interviews I had with them. Both of them were really well spoken, which really impressed me. When I was interviewing Wyatt, I wanted to emphasize how his leadership has led to team success and how being a team captain has helped him in other parts of his life. When I interviewed Shane, I felt that he did a good job talking about how WVU Hockey is trying to build a program that the university can take great pride in.

Probably the biggest challenge I had with this story was framing my interviews and shooting b-roll. The shots of my interview had to be zoomed in more because the interviewees weren’t framed all that great. When you watch my story, you will see a few shots with the camera on the ice, which was a big risk to the camera and myself since I was lying down on the ice to get those shots. Even though I was very cold by the end of shooting, I would say getting those shots was 100% worth it.

Even though I wasn’t anchoring, it was still a proud moment to see my story being played. This class is a brand new experience for me and I did not know what to expect going in. After the first newscast, I feel more confident and look forward to shooting more stories and not risking myself getting hurt. Going into my next story, I will have to learn proper ways to do Zoom interviews since all interviews with varsity athletes at WVU are being done virtually due to the pandemic. Overall, I felt that I put together a package that I feel really proud of and can’t wait to see what other stories I do going forward.
