Newscast #3 - Andrew Nogowski - Spring 2022
For show 3, my story was about Mary Roush being named the 68th Mountaineer Mascot. Roush is
only the third ever female Mountaineer in WVU’s history. Going in, I went into this story not knowing who was going to win until the announcement of the winner. So, I had to come up with specific questions to ask each candidate if they won. I wanted to do this story because this competition only occurs once a year and the Mountaineer is the most recognizable person in the state of West Virginia. When people think of West Virginia, the Mountaineer is often the first thing that comes to people’s minds.
For my story, I interviewed Mary Roush and she was a great person to interview. I was able to talk to her right after the announcement of her victory so it was great to see her excitement on camera and while being interviewed. I also interviewed Timothy Eads, who was the 66th Mountaineer Mascot and a member of the Mountaineer Selection Committee. I thought it was important to hear from Timmy to hear what it was like for him to be the Mountaineer and what piece of advice he would give to Roush.
The biggest challenge I had when making this package was that I really did not have enough in close/tight shots. Since it was an event, I had to get everything in one take and there were no redos with this package. The game itself was also very close and they did not announce Roush as winner until very late in the game. That is why you can hear the crowd really loudly in the background while she talks. I also should have tried to interview her with the game going on in the background and not at the wall so that it would have been more visually interesting. Finally, I had a few framing issues with interviews with both of my interviews being framed on the right side of the screen.
Overall, this was a very tough story to shoot, considering there were no redos with this package. However, I will say I did have fun shooting this package. It was a really fun experience to be courtside at the basketball game. It was the first time I had ever been sitting that close to the action at a basketball game. For the future, I will definitely make sure I get enough tight shots for my next package. The production of this package has been a great learning experience for me.
