Newscast #2 - Haley Kish - Spring 2024

I have always known being a journalist is a career that I would love. Whether that entails sports or news broadcasting, photojournalism, or writing, I have always wanted to be apart of this career path. When I was in high school, my passion for journalism grew as I wrote and took pictures for our school newspaper. Upon graduation, I went to Georgia State University for my freshman year and worked for the radio station, Album 88. In my sophomore year, I transferred to West Virginia University and my journalism experience bloomed.

Going into my senior year, I have been honored with the opportunity to be a co-producer alongside Sydney this semester for WVU News. The two of us work really well together and it has been so fun working with her. She is an amazing person to go to for advice since she was a part of WVU News last year. We have a great balance of dividing and conquering the workload.

Going into pitching for show two, everyone felt more comfortable and confident. Pitching went very well and everyone seemed very excited to cover their topics. During our meeting, two reporters brought up a potential VO SOT idea that ended up making show with West Virginia Senator, Joe Manchin.

I enjoy writing conferences the most. I am able to sit in on the meetings and learn from Prof. Dahlia and Prof. Marra as they give feedback to the students on their packages. During these conferences, all of the class got together and Prof. Dahlia announced that for the remainder of the semester, WVU News shows will now be from 26 to 29 minutes long compared to the 14-minute and 30-second show we had before.

Going into production day for our second show, everyone seemed to take their feedback into consideration to improve their packages. We had a good number of students submit their packages early, which made the whole process faster. This week, I was tasked with going over all the scripts and ensuring they were transcribed and formatted correctly. Almost everyone made show two, which was very exciting!

There were some challenges this week with the overall script. It was my first time working on A-Block and out show is now twice as long, so it was a learning curve for me. There were some issues with the script this week, but after meeting with Prof. Dahlia and Prof. Marra, I know what I need to improve on for show three.

For the taping days, we did three run-throughs. There were some hiccups here and there in the control room, but the anchors were all very comfortable for show two, compared to show one. I am excited to see what great things we accomplish for show three and hope that it runs more smoothly!
