Newscast #4 - Haley Kish - Spring 2024

Haley and D

After a successful fourth show, we have started working on our final show. We started the two weeks with a pitching meeting where everyone gave their ideas about what they covered for this show. After everyone pitched their ideas, we started working on coming up with the overall theme for show five - the special edition show.

Next, everyone went to work filming their packages. On Wednesday, we had our writing conferences and almost everyone’s packages were “show ready." Without fail, every week, everyone has issues with their audio levels, but that is an easy fix. Everyone stepped up their game for their packages, as they were all entertaining to watch. All of the reporters are getting more creative with their stand-ups and their SOT TZs.

This week, I was tasked with writing the B and C block. These two blocks are my favorite to produce, as B block is more light-hearted and C block covers sports. In B block, we had Studio B with Sterling and I loved writing his lead-in and return. His pieces are always creative, which allows me to also be creative when writing his portion of the script.

After a constructive meeting going over our finished script, production day was underway. Everyone came in and finished up their packages and were anxious to find out who made show. Since moving to a 30-minute show, almost everyone can make the show every week. I think since switching the times around, the reporters are working harder since they know their packages have a greater chance of being on the show. Every package that makes show is a good builder for resume reels.

This week we had seven anchors on set. It is always fun being able to see more and more people get the chance to lead in their packages. With that many people on set, there come some challenges, but each taping helps us get better. Taping this week was a bit of a struggle. There were some hiccups here and there, but we finally got the best take at the very end. We had a lot of visitors too. Some students were visiting the studio for their class, while others were incoming freshmen. I had the chance to talk with one incoming freshman who wants to be a producer when she takes the class.

Outside of the classroom, I have been applying for many producing positions. Last week, I took a writing test for WKRG, located in Mobile, Alabama, and they spoke with all of my references. I should hear back from them this upcoming week as right after taping I flew to Las Vegas, Nevada to celebrate my graduation.

Overall, this week was very constructive and I am excited to see what the special edition show has in store for us. We are approaching the end of the semester and a majority of the class is graduating.
