Newscast #3 - Sydney Wentz - Spring 2024

S and H

This week I felt that we made significant improvements as both a class and as a co-producing team. The content for this week's show is so diverse and covered such a strong and wide range of topics that we were able to stack the show in a manner reflective of an industry newscast.

I was tasked with writing the A block for this newscast. It covered a variety of hard-news topics including campus carry at WVU and the death penalty potentially being reinstated in West Virginia. It taught me a lot about myself as a journalist, especially when working with sensitive topics and conversational writing for our anchors.

I feel as though after the last newscast, Haley and I were able to get a better grasp producing a 30-minute show. We were able to work on our research and copy editing to make sure we created a near-perfect format and achieved stronger writing than the previous week. Our teamwork has only improved our skills as producers and it has made me so happy and proud to see our progress and camaraderie!

Outside of the class, I used spring break as an opportunity to tour various news stations across the state for potential job offers. Seeing how prepared WVU News has made many of the alumni who work at these stations makes me feel more confident in my abilities as I head towards graduation. I would like to thank Anna Baxter at WSAZ and Robert Schaper at WOWK for hosting me at their stations!

We had a surprise visitor on set this week. Dean Keith Jackson, who will become the Dean of the new merged College of Creative Arts and Media July 1st, 2024. We had a great time showing him around the studio and even let him try his hand at producing!

The segments I have enjoyed writing most are having our reporters on-set to throw their own packages. It has created a friendly competition amongst our class to make their packages the best they can be so they get to be on set. We are also seeing an increase in creativity through stand-ups and SOT TZs, which makes our show more interactive and professional.

Overall, I think this week's newscast is going to be the best yet! We have an excellent mix of content and our reporters on-set are throwing their packages. We were also very pleased with how we did in production this week! We are making fewer and fewer mistakes each week and are starting to understand and make critical decisions as co-producers! This is our strongest writing thus far and I think we are finally getting in a groove of the production schedule as most of us in the class have graduation quickly approaching!
