Newscast #2 - Ian Miller - Spring 2019

Newscast #2 is in the books! It’s hard to explain how much of an improvement everyone made between show one and show two. It’s impressive how much everyone is grasping what they need to do and how quickly they have been able to put everything together.

Through the last week, we have all pinpointed where we need to improve and smooth out the edges. I expected our first newscast to go fairly rough. What I didn’t expect was how much most of the people understood what they needed to get better at; and did they do better.

Of course, our reporters still need some help, especially when they go out and shoot. I went with our Social Square reporter, Carly Vaniver, to help her film her tease that was one of the ones that started off our second show. Our other reporters went off on their own with help from Megan Guerra and each other. They’re starting to get it and it’s paying dividends on screen.

Interestingly enough, Carly covered the education reform bill before the teachers went on strike. Which was unfortunate because the teachers went on strike the very day of our taping. Goes to show that breaking news never sleeps!

Our day of taping was so much better than the first go round. This time Gina Dahlia was there to oversee taping and it was a massive help to all of us. It made all of us better and step up our game. It made our show go smoother and the final product looked great!

I’m getting more comfortable leading our team as well. In the control room, I’m feeling like I am coming into my own as a producer. I love being the positive support for our anchors, teaching them what to improve on, and being the calming voice in their ear. This is the gratifying part of my job.

I also have to give a nod to Christine Robinson. I stated that we all improved from show one to show two, but none more than her. Her package made show, she had the best tease, and she stepped up her game on set! You will be seeing more of her packages in the coming shows, no doubt.
