Newscast #4 - Jensen Mills - Fall 2019

This week was a huge milestone for me! The fourth newscast is finished and I feel a lot better about being a producer. I’m definitely thrilled that I cut the time for writing my script in half and Prof. D. also said that it was my best script yet, so yay for improving!

jensenMy teases and transitions are getting a lot better along with my timing! The past two rundowns have been nearly perfect, so I think I’ve got that part down. Everything’s coming to me a lot easier and I’m able to pick stories in a better order by deciding which story should lead and which story we should put at the end of the block. I also think my boothing is getting better. I made sure to encourage and coach each of the anchors while talking to them like Prof. D. said I should try to focus on. Everyone is coming to me with story ideas or asking for possible events to cover and I love it! It feels great to finally be someone they can come to with no hesitation. The thing I’m most proud of this week is I was finally able to relax and enjoy it. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed being the producer, but I’m more comfortable now and have  learned from my mistakes. I’m able to take a step back and smile while doing my job and that's a great feeling!

While there were many reasons to celebrate this week, there’s always room for improvement! My VO this week was weaker and I also thought that I could have included more hard hitting facts in my VO’s. I need to keep in mind that while VO’s aren’t packages, they’re still important to the show. It should be written in a way that will give the audience the most crucial points that a package would give. The other thing I need to work on is being more attentive to the newscast no matter what distractions there are. We had a packed house in the studio this week that included two families and an entire

jensenfirst grade class that came to watch the show… Needless to say there was a lot different things going on behind the scenes. This was good practice for me to work on doing my job even when it seems too hectic. In a newsroom, there’s going to be breaking news and lots of different people talking so I need to work a little bit more on my multitasking skills.

This week was the first week I wasn’t as stressed… I knew what the days required and how to write the script smoothly. I genuinely enjoyed myself… Can we start week five yet?
