Newscast #5 - Jensen Mills - Fall 2019
This week went so smoothly and I’m so happy about it! It only took me four hours to write the script, which included me stopping to get some Starbucks. I didn’t have to write a VO for this week’s show, but I still got the script done faster than the previous shows. I also felt more comfortable writing the script for this week’s show too! It seemed second nature to me. I didn’t have to stop and think about what a good transition would be, it just came naturally. It actually only took Prof. D. 45 minutes to go through and critique my script, which is an incredible difference from the eight hours it took for the first script.
For the last show, I really need to focus on my teases. While they’ve gotten stronger, Nolan definitely helps tighten them. I also have to sit for about five to ten minutes while trying to think about a creative tease, so I want to be able to start coming up with more creative teases quicker. Prof. D. only changed a few words in my transitions. I’ve learned that I need to be careful when writing for sensitive subjects. For example, our lead story this week was about two local teens overdosed on vape juice that was laced with heroin. In my tease, I never included the word, “accidentally”, which it made it sound like the teens overdosed on purpose. These are very small details that I need to be more aware of in the future. Other than that, my timing was nearly perfect this week, so I’m thrilled about how far I’ve come.
As far as boothing this week, I made sure I talked to the anchors a lot more and coached them through the show. I found myself picking up on details that I would have never caught the first week such as small strands of hair sticking out or the camera saturation. However, the thing I was most proud of was that I wasn’t nervous! The past four shows I freaked out on the inside and was always tapping my foot, but this week I was just excited. I woke up relaxed, which makes me
I just can’t believe we’re already going into our last newscast. I’ve already learned so much this semester and I can’t wait to start on the special edition show! I might be nervous for that one because the show can be up to a half hour long, but I’m excited to see how it turns out.
