Newscast #4 - Kayla Starcher - Spring 2021

I feel like I say this every time I write a blog post, but this newscast was our best one so far! This was one of the shows we will be submitting for competitions in the next year, so I can’t wait to see how well it does.

Our reporters continue to amaze me every week. They all came in with so much talent and potential and they’ve only gotten stronger. We had two reporters make show for the first time. It’s a testament to how hard they’re all working. It was difficult to choose who made show and who didn’t; mostly it came down to small technical issues. The critique and review process for packages has gotten smoother and quicker each week. Now, the producing team looks at the packages as they come in, write down all the fixes, and hop on the phone to figure out who made show.

This was the first week I did the rundown and show order all on my own. I had some small mistakes that Professor Dahlia corrected, but overall I am proud of what I came up with. I just struggle now with not falling into the same pattern over and over. I don’t want the shows to look too similar. For our final special edition show, I want to push myself to be more creative. This newscast was unique because our assistant producer Connor stepped in to get more experience producing. After I finished the rundown, he wrote B block on his own. I was really impressed with his work! It also made my job much easier since I only had to write A block then do minor edits on what he wrote.

Boothing the show, as usual, was a blast. Everyone is getting tired as we near the end of the semester, but they all push through it and give it 110 percent. Our anchors are great at giving feedback to me on how I can be more helpful to them. Everyone behind the cameras and in the control room also did an amazing job. I can’t wait to see how our final newscast turns out! It will be different than the others and take more care to work out, but I know our team can pull through.
