Newscast #2 - Makenna Leisifer - Spring 2023

Show 2 is filmed and went really well compared to Show 1. After going from eight takes, down to three, I’d say I'm very impressed and very proud of this crew. I co-produced with my Associate Producer, Tolu, for this show and I have to say, I think I like co-producing a lot. It not only gives Tolu experience with producing but cuts the load in half on me so we can both work together. One thing I am learning in this process is to always look back on the feedback Professor Dahlia gives me to improve on for each show. I make sure that I try to hit all the errors I can before it's sent to Professor Dahlia and Professor Marra. I spent almost three days researching, fact-checking, and editing everyone’s scripts to make the show. It was a long process, but it was super worth it in the end.

To have a recap on exactly how preparing for a show goes from an idea, to on the screen is a lot. We started the Monday after the first show by having our news meeting on what packages were going to be shot, and what beats were going to be covered.  It's pretty cool to see everyone’s ideas come to life when everyone then goes out into the field to shoot and interview people. Wednesday, we had off for all the reporters to film, which for me was used to get ahead on homework since the next two to three days are going to be heavy writing. I helped Sydney this past show shoot on the Monongahela River for her package and some b-roll for her package. Thursday is a crazy day for everyone in WVU News. I was on Zoom from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and then back on zoom at 9 p.m.  During this day, everyone is in their conferences for their packages for critiques on what to fix before the 9 p.m. deadline on what needs to be corrected.  When 9 p.m. rolled around, Professor D., Professor Marra, Tolu, and I all watched the packages and picked who made the show, and who made BOR. At the same time, I was writing fix sheets for the reporters on what needed to be fixed in their pieces even if they didn’t make the show. It was a very fast meeting and after that would start the writing process.

Friday was a hectic day for sure, but since producing West Virginia Today, and a show on WVU News I wasn’t really worried. I finished all the fix sheets, sent them out by 5 p.m. and started the rundown. The rundown is the overview of how the show will run and I completed it in a record time this time. I spent all of Friday night writing the A-block of the show, while Tolu had the B-block. Once he was finished, I got his copy, and I sent him mine to copy edit for the final draft of the master script. When both parts were complete, I created the master script. Once I felt that it was ready to be sent to Professor Dahlia, I double-checked everything at this point to make sure it all is good! By Sunday night, I got my feedback as well as Tolu, and combined had a pretty low number of errors!

On Wednesday, we were back in the studio getting ready for taping. I was getting really excited to tape because I knew everyone wanted to have a great show. The booth was a lot calmer this show, but we are all starting to work as a team, and I couldn’t ask for a better team. I definitely have been improving in coaching the anchors and creating a better relationship with them.

I am so excited for the future shows, and can’t wait to be back on March 22, after Spring Break! Two down, three to  go!
