Newscast #3 - Makenna Leisifer - Spring 2023

Our third show was a breeze compared to the first show. We are working better as a team as the weeks progress. It’s really starting to hit me that I only have five weeks left in college, and it’s crazy that graduation is right around the corner. Representing the College of Media and being the producer of this show has been an honor. That being said, I have goals for my last two WVU News episodes. I want everyone to work for more complex packages because I know everyone has the creativity for it. As the producer, I help lead this group and I want them to push themselves to be the best journalists they can be. Many of the reporters ask me questions about story ideas, so I want everyone to try new and innovative techniques so that they all have amazing MMJ reels.

This show had a lot of very informative packages and good visuals. Writing the show was a lot of data in my block. My co-producer and I have been splitting the show in half, leaving me with writing just the A-block. My block had some hard news pieces including a new bill for concealed carry-on college campuses, the one-year anniversary of the Russian-Ukrainian War, and also insulin prices for diabetics. This block was A LOT of research and fact-checking.

To summarize the time I was able to be around before getting sick, we had our news meeting and everyone officially pitched their ideas. I also created a new part of the morning called, “The Producer’s Corner,” which is all the things everyone needs to focus on and work more on for the shows in the future. I think it definitely helps the students and professors see what needs to be worked on. We had our conferences on the Thursday before spring break, and we watched all the first drafts. We waited until 9 p.m. to watch all the final packages and declare the show. Spring break came the next week, and I feel that everyone was so happy we had a break. We came back and had our anchor meeting, during which I ran the rehearsal for the first half. In these rehearsals, I coached the anchors on how to say certain words. Sadly, I got sick Wednesday morning of the show and couldn’t be there to booth.

I want to shout out to my co-producer, Tolu, for boothing this week's show and taking the reins while I was sick. It was definitely a new thing for him to pick up in a short time, but I am proud of him since the position can be stressful. I cannot wait to be back to finish out these last two shows strong! Three down, two to go!
